TAL Announces Appointment of New CEO
EDMONTON, AB – November 22, 2024 – The Alberta Library (TAL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Darel Bennedbaek as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2024. Darel replaces Dr. Margaret Law who is stepping down as Chief Executive Officer effective December 31, 2023.
Darel brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success, particularly in his role at Lethbridge College. With a strategic vision and a commitment to staff and organizational excellence, he is poised to lead TAL into its next phase of growth and innovation. “We are thrilled to welcome Darel to TAL. His impressive leadership skills, innovative approaches and industry knowledge make him the ideal candidate to lead TAL into the future,” said Karen Keiller, Chair, The Alberta Library.
In 2008, Darel received a Bachelor of English (Hons) degree from the University of New Brunswick in Saint John; then in 2012, a Masters degree in Library and Information Studies from the University of Alberta. His experience includes several years as a systems librarian, both at Burman University and Lethbridge College. In 2021, he became the library manager at Lethbridge College, where he played a key role in reimagining library and literacy services.
Throughout his career, Darel has empowered employees and patrons by building frameworks that set them up for success and allows them to thrive on applying innovative ideas to dynamic environments and reimagining traditional approaches to suit conventional and unconventional contexts. Darel expressed excitement about joining TAL, stating “I am humbled to take on the role of CEO at TAL. I believe in TAL’s potential for continued success and ability to grow with the library community. I look forward to working with the talented team and Board.” The Alberta Library, created in 1997, is a not-for-profit library consortium of public, post-secondary, government, and special libraries.
